ABOUT "MOTHER"

Led by acclaimed choreographer Andrea Miller, known for her visceral, boundary-pushing work, GALLIM presents MOTHER, premiering November 5th at The Joyce Theater.

The work reflects the heartbeat and pulses that connect us to Mother, home center for continuity of life, the profound meeting point of past, present and future. The work sets the stage for a visceral, shared experience in which the dancers are conduits for an intense and exhilarating imagined gestation of a new life.

...

If humanity is the baby, what could a mother provide for its survival? What songs, dances, smells would carry it through centuries of change? What would she dream for it? In this imagined womb, a meeting point of past, present, and future, the dancers give shape to a new life. MOTHER is a physical expression of an imagined birth story and destiny." - Andrea Miller

ABOUT THE HARLEM CHEF'S LAB AT REFETTORIO HARLEM

Refettorio Harlem serves 3 course dinners to the food insecure at no cost, 2 times a week, serving 600 meals per week. Along with its broad coalition of food waste partners including Baldor Specialty Foods, the program recovers 2000 lbs of food headed into the waste stream and redirects it to its fresh choice pantry model that provides over 100 people a week organic groceries.

The Harlem Chef’s Lab at Refettorio Harlem is a monthly series of collaborative dinners and seasonal soireés blending music, art and food at Free Food’s Refettorio Harlem, a newly renovated space inside the Emanuel AME Church. Proceeds from the event go towards Free Food’s mission of serving food with dignity and love, and preventing food waste. Great art, great design, great food, and great hospitality goes into each of the 500 meals we serve each week.

"Cooking is a call to act. It is about making visible the invisible, giving a voice to the voiceless, and transforming waste into a resource for the future." Food for Soul Co-Founder Massimo Bottura

ABOUT "THE INVENTION OF MOTHER" MENU

“The Invention of MOTHER” menu, conceived by Silvia Baldini and Meryl Rosofsky, is a celebration of nourishment, substance, and the timeless cycles of creation. Through symbolic ingredients like eggs, oysters, spring peas, beets, pomegranate seeds, milk, and honey, and foundational "mother" elements of the kitchen— sourdough cultures, consommé and broths, classic sauces, and vinegar mothers— the menu honors the deep human instincts to nurture and sustain. Each dish, from butter candles melting over sculptural bread tablescapes to meringue nests cradling fruit, evokes the themes of fertility, abundance, and the transformative power of care. Yet woven into this homage is a subtle social commentary: an acknowledgment of the often-invisible labor of mothers and caretakers who invent, nourish, and sustain life in ways both profound and overlooked. Through our menu and the food served, we explore not just the act of feeding, but the radical, inventive spirit at the heart of every creation story.
